EventsCountdown to the National Apprenticeship Competition (NAC)

Each year, skilled apprentices from UBC across the country are selected to attend regional showcases, where they demonstrate their abilities in various trades and compete against other apprentices. The winners of these regional competitions earn the opportunity to compete in the National Apprenticeship Competition (NAC). This year, the NAC will take place in Edmonton, Alberta, from September 25th to 27th, featuring competitions in Carpentry, Drywall, Floor Covering, Millwright, and Scaffolding. For Behnam Kamali, UBC member and participant in last year’s competition, the experience was truly life-changing.

Behnam immigrated to Canada with a background in civil engineering and a strong passion for carpentry. Determined to turn that passion into a career, he connected with the Carpenters’ Union through proactive outreach and enrolment in UBC training programs. This journey ultimately led him to the NAC.

While initially uncertain of what to expect, Behnam found that the competition was “exceptionally well-organized and of high quality”. He recalled the emotions he felt having his family there to support him, “Participating alongside my family became one of my most cherished moments since immigrating to Canada.”

Despite facing some initial nerves, Behnam credited the support of his coach Max Mazzotta and the warm encouragement from Pat Bono and other Union leaders making him feel welcome and capable.

“Participating in the competition has profoundly influenced my career, both directly and indirectly, by enhancing my skills and expanding my professional network.” Said Behnam who added, “the competition deepened my pride in my craftsmanship and strengthened my commitment to the union.”

To the new apprentices entering the competition, Behnam offers this advice: “approach the competition with confidence and enthusiasm. Embrace the experience fully, as it offers invaluable learning and personal growth opportunities.”

As we look ahead to this year’s National Apprenticeship Competition, we celebrate the stories of participants like Behnam Kamali – whose passion, determination, and pride in their craft continue to inspire the next generation of union members.
