UBC members and contractor partners in Northern Ontario can look forward to expanded training opportunities on the horizon as construction begins on a new facility at the UBC Training Centre in Sudbury.

The new 14,000 sq. ft. building will provide additional classrooms and a second shop floor, increasing capacity to meet high demand for apprenticeship and skills training. This latest addition will help address the challenges of long active waitlists by increasing the UBC’s ability to train the workforce of the future.

The project is one of five UBC training centres receiving renovations or additions thanks to investment from the Government of Ontario through its Skills Development Fund (SDF) Capital Stream. The SDF funding for the new facility in Sudbury aims to strengthen Ontario’s trades workforce and create career opportunities for Northern communities.

UBC leadership welcomed the Honourable David Piccini, Ontario’s Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, along with Parliamentary Assistants Sheref Sabawy and Chris Scott, to a groundbreaking ceremony on August 8 to mark the start of construction.

The new Sudbury Local 2486 Training Centre facility will support the training of 250 new carpenters in the region, while providing UBC members with more opportunities for upskilling, support, and career progression.

The new Sudbury Local 2486 Training Centre is made possible by an investment from the Government of Ontario’s Skills Development Fund Capital Stream.
