Sisters in the BrotherhoodCapacity Building ProjectPrograms

The UBC Sisters in the Brotherhood Capacity Building Project (SIBCAP) aims to identify the needs of women in construction and create strategic partnerships to support them.

Women in construction often face barriers like gender bias, limited mentorship, and a lack of inclusive workplaces.
SIBCAP

The UBC is committed to breaking down these barriers by providing training, support networks, and leadership opportunities for Sisters. Through mentorship programs, advocacy, and dedicated initiatives, the UBC helps ensure women not only enter the trades—but thrive in them.

Systemic childcare solutions include:

  • Earlier drop off times and later pick up times
  • Shorter waitlists
  • Flexible childcare options
  • Quality drop-in childcare arrangements
  • Raising the age limit
  • Employers working with members to help alleviate these strains
  • Providing subsidy options for stay-at-home family members or alternate family able to take paternity leave

Harassment, Needs Analysis, and Data Collection

  • SIBCAP is working on developing a system for recording, reporting, and responding to incidents of harassment, sexual harassment, and discrimination that women experience. Revising UBC’s reporting structures and creating materials for union locals and jobsites to help guide women who are victims of harassment, sexual harassment and discrimination.
  • SIBCAP is developing a data collection and analysis strategy, which includes conducting a Canada-wide survey on Childcare and Harassment. A Needs Assessment Survey has been sent out to women in April 2025
