Member HighlightsRemembrance Day with Romulo Santos

As Remembrance Day approaches, we are reminded to honour the sacrifices of Canada’s veterans and recognize those still actively serving. One of these active servicemen is Romulo Alves Santos, a foreman, Combat Engineer, and UBC Local 675 member.

Romulo’s journey is a story of resilience, reinvention, and service. Originally from Natal, Brazil, Romulo came to Canada to improve his English and expand his career opportunities. While he was trained in software and network engineering, he decided to switch paths and join the trades. This journey led Romulo to Local 675, which he says gave him access to “reliable work, proper training, and a sense of belonging in a new country. It was truly a turning point in my career.”

Romulo took full advantage of union training and managed to place near the top of his class while also working full-time. “I worked hard, asked questions, and never stopped learning,” he says. That hard work paid off as he became a foreman and has since led crews on major projects like the Rogers Centre renovation and Trillium Health Partners Hospital.

Alongside his construction career, Romulo has proudly served in the Canadian Army Reserves for eight years as a Combat Engineer – inspired by his grandfather’s military service.

Balancing military and construction work hasn’t been easy. “The union is a key part in helping me to maintain both jobs because unfortunately, not all employers help you to take time off to serve,” Romulo explains. He credits Local 675, and especially President Julio DaSilva, for supporting his dual career path. “He went above and beyond to help me find work whenever I needed it. He also made sure my employment stayed stable and flexible during training periods and deployments.”

Romulo’s advice: “Don’t be afraid to start over or take a different path. The trades offer a fulfilling, stable career with real opportunities for growth. And if you feel the call to serve, know that it’s absolutely possible to balance both military service and construction work with the right support system. Discipline, hard work, and resilience are values that apply to both fields and will carry you far in life.”

This Remembrance Day, we celebrate the stories of members like Romulo Alves Santos, who serve Canada both on the jobsite and in uniform.
