Can the trades run in the family? It does for father and Local 675 member Fred Ings, who works alongside his son, Raymond. Fred says that, in addition to a fulfilling career, the support and protection provided by the Union also inspired Raymond to pursue a career in the trades.
Fred joined the Union in 1989 and quickly worked his way up from being an apprentice to a foreman. Raymond, who has been with the Union for almost 10 years, also quickly became a journeyman and is now a pieceworker.
Although they don’t work every job together, in many instances, Fred and Raymond get to work side by side. When they do, it’s an opportunity for Fred and his son to talk about the job and connect in a meaningful way. Fred says he enjoys discussing the tips and tricks of the trade and what each of them learned from their day.
Fellow members have often commented on how lucky Fred and his son are to be working together. Fred couldn’t agree more, as he says he is incredibly grateful to work with Raymond and to have built such a dynamic relationship.
As a father, Fred wants to ensure that Raymond’s career is something he truly enjoys and that it’s not just a job but a fulfilling life path. That’s why he always reminds Raymond to ask for help or insight when he needs it. And if Fred is around, Raymond knows he’s never alone. For Fred, the real reward is watching his son succeed.
Fred advises other parents to continue supporting and encouraging their children and to cherish the opportunity to teach them, because otherwise, everything goes by fast. Fred says watching his children grow up and lead happy lives makes everything worthwhile.
