It may surprise some members that the UBC represents more than just the skilled trades. Through HOPE Local 2220, the UBC also represents healthcare, office, and professional employees; workers who provide critical support in hospitals, long-term care homes, and retirement facilities across Ontario.
Healthcare is an important yet often underappreciated profession. HOPE 2220 members’ work is both physically and emotionally demanding, caring for some of Canada’s most vulnerable populations, often in fast-paced and high-risk environments.
Long-term care, hospital and in-home care situations present daily challenges with infection control, patient movement, and ergonomic safety. Healthcare workers must remain vigilant of hazards that can cause injuries or threaten safety, not just to themselves, but also to their patients.
Thanks to an investment from the Government of Ontario’s Skills Development Fund (SDF) Training Stream, the UBC is delivering a new program of health and safety training to HOPE members, focused on:
- Proper use of equipment and ergonomic techniques to reduce physical strain.
- Workplace health and safety fundamentals.
- Strategies for preventing injuries and recognizing hazards before they cause harm.
- How to communicate effectively with employers about safety concerns and improvements.
Many participants had never undergone such comprehensive safety training before, but now, they are gaining knowledge and confidence to help make their workplaces safer for everyone.
The first of these sessions was hosted by Local 18 in Hamilton, with additional sessions hosted at Local 93 in Ottawa and Local 27 in Toronto. Delivering the training in UBC facilities has created opportunities for connection and solidarity between UBC members from entirely different sectors. Conversations and shared experiences highlight what unites all members: commitment to safety, pride in skill, and a dedication to making every workplace better.
