<p><strong>About: </strong></p>
<p>The 1919 Winnipeg General Strike was a pivotal six-week labour movement sparked by demands for fair wages and the right to collective bargaining. Following unsuccessful negotiations in the metal and building trades, the Winnipeg Trades and Labour Council—representing the city's unions—initiated a city-wide general strike. On May 15, more than 30,000 workers, both unionized and non-unionized, walked off the job, effectively bringing the city to a standstill. This historic action laid the foundation for enduring labour representation in Winnipeg, including the establishment of Local 343 for Carpenters and Scaffolders, affiliated with the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America. </p>
