Historically, UBC members have played a vital role in Saskatchewan’s large-scale industrial projects. However, Local 1985 is now expanding its market share by venturing into new construction areas. For the first time in years, members of Local 1985 Saskatchewan are taking on both residential and commercial projects. This growth has been facilitated by strong partnerships with contractors R3 Construction in Saskatoon and Ontario Inc. in Regina.
In early 2024, R3 Construction reached out to Local 1985 to provide two carpenters for a commercial-grade beam project. Our members excelled in supporting both their commercial and residential divisions, which resulted in additional members being dispatched for subsequent projects. This reflects significant progress made in just two years. Our collaboration with Ontario Inc. began with the construction of a new McDonald’s in Yorkton, where several members were assigned. As workers demonstrated their experience and training, the number of UBC members on site increased. Our partnership has since expanded, and our members are now also involved in renovating the Standing Buffalo Community Water Treatment Plant and framing numerous residential houses in the Regina area. Additionally, Ontario Inc. has been certified as a signatory contractor, ensuring continued growth and partnership in the future.
Expanding into new markets can be challenging, but Local 1985 is proud to have successfully established a presence in Saskatchewan’s commercial and residential sectors. R3 Construction and Ontario Inc. can confidently bid on new projects, knowing that UBC members can adapt to various developments when given the opportunity. The success of Local 1985 highlights how strong relationships between unions and contractors can foster mutual growth, enabling both parties to enhance their capabilities and thrive in a changing industry.
